Mike Hosty is a comedic one-man band legend who can do things on stage that few entertainers in the world, if any, could pull off in a live setting.
A cover version of his song “Oklahoma Breakdown” reached #1 in a genre that few associate him with. This documentary explores why a legend of the underground didn’t chase the limelight when he could have been a millionaire.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think about this project is, why? Why isn’t Mike Hosty, the most gifted musician/comedian I’ve ever seen, some worldwide sensation? Why is he not traveling the globe or hosting his own variety show on a major streaming service or some nationally televised program?
I had been wondering this for over two decades and finally had the free schedule in my life to search for the answers. What makes him different than everybody else? His talent. I didn’t want to do a film about a unique cultural story that has bad music and market it as a music doc, so I was off to a great start. Five years later, my little passion project evolved into a full-length feature doc called “Oklahoma Breakdown,” named after a song he wrote that became famous, yet nobody knew who wrote it or where it came from.
